There are many options when looking at teaching being highlighted In the movies. Most recently there has been several featuring particularly bad exmples of teaching in movies such as Bad Teacher and Whiplash.
There are two recent very musical movies that highlight two very different approaches to music education. These are highlighted in the links below. |
Whiplash - 2015https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnuImW1dWAk
There is just so many things wrong with this example of teaching and conducting. A little background to this scene is that Andrew is a new addition to the band and this is his first rehearsal. Miles is having troubles maintaining a steady tempo and this frustrates the conductor Fletcher. Fletcher makes an attempt to help Andrew understand where he is going wrong and thats where things go wrong. This is an example of problematic teaching, where fletcher invades on the students privacy, belittles him and worst of all makes physical contact with him. I chose whiplash because its an over the top example of some things that should never happen in a positive learning environment. |
SCHOOL OF ROCK -2003https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_-4d8YBojo
A background of where this clip picks up from in the movie, is that the teacher is actually an imposter, pretending to be his brother Ned as a teacher, in reality he has no background in teaching. Although on the surface this movie is seen as just comedy the teacher does many things right in the way he approaches getting his students started on these instruments that are new to them and a genera of music that they are unfamiliar with. This is and example of good teaching, the way he approaches the students makes them feel empowered and is constantly using positive reinforcement as a means of building confidence in the students. |
