The idea of normalcy is actually quite a frustrating one, as a society we need to shift from the idea of normalcy to individuality. We need to value this individuality as its something we all posses. Before we begin to talk about the idea of disability i would like to talk about my strong dislike for words like ableism and othering, I find them to be demeaning . These are words that should be used against no one, regardless on ability or skill set using these words is a form of discrimination in my eyes.
overcoming a disability is the opposite of reality. We need to help people understand disability and then how to live, function and manage their disability. This takes acceptance from everyone including society as a whole. To people with a disability they are simply living it is their life it is their “Normal” if that exists, often the greatest suffering they feel is the oppression and discrimination that people who don't understand impart into their life.
There is no one simple solution but it starts with understanding. Some important that steps that need to follow are the end of use of words that are demeaning to the differently abled, stop the idea that there is a normal as it simply does not exist, individuality is normality.
